Boko Haram hss been doing this for years, to mostly crickets. The far left, for all their professed piety and moral preening, does not really care about black or brown people or jews.

Another thought experiment is to try and find a single demonstrator who would agree to live for one second in Hamastan under Hamas rules. You won't find one. "Good enough for thee, but not for me" should be what they shout at these demonstrations, not "from the river to the sea"

Free Palestine from Hamas, and from their supposed friends in the far left.

Yes, I remember there was some awareness around one round of Nigerian girls getting kidnapped, but since that one instance: nothing. And it just happened again.

Soothsaying.....impressive.

> I blocked that person. While I’m open to debate, including educating people who have clearly received false info about Israel, as soon as someone announces themselves as a blatant antisemite, I’m done. And that person was posting insanity all over my Substack! Thanks for fighting back though—I do appreciate it.

More deceit, now on top off cowardly censorship.

Groovy. Are you ready to prove me wrong @anzabannanna? No? OK then. No hijab and marriage rape for you then. Too bad. You seemed like such a fan of it for a second there -- "for thee but not for me", I guess.

Any other keyboard commandos out there, ready to prove me wrong?

Why am I hearing crickets? You all seemed like such fans of that fascist Hamas death cult? What happened?

Bueller? Beuller?

Antucipating hypocrisy and a tinge of racism [Hamas is good enough for those brown skinned A-rabs, but not little white me, amirite?] from moral preeners like you and yours isn't soothsaying, it's a mortal lock like gravity.

Free Palestine from Hamas and moral cretins like you and yours.

There is a line in the great movie Gentlemen’s agreement when the child is upset how he is being treated because the world thought he was Jewish, when the girlfriend of Gregory Peck grabbed the child and told him not to worry because he’s really not a Jew. You see this is all explainable to those in the agreement, it won’t happen to them because they are not Jews. Plus ca la change plus ca le memechose

I have fallen out with many of those around me because none of them believe what happened on 7th October. They say that if it was true, they would have heard about it. I try to explain some of the atrocities but they look at me as if I’m mad. The more I try to explain, the madder I look. Not one of them is then inspired to look further into it. They drone on about all the dead Palestinians. I come back at them with how the figures are inflated, many of the dead are Hamas, that civilians are used as shields, that the BBC has been biased in its reporting, that Isreal is providing aid, it’s a war and people die in wars etc etc. Nothing I say has an impact. I have come away with a sad truth - either everyone I know is thick as shit or they hated Jews to begin with and nothing will change that view. I fear it’s the latter. I am not Jewish, I have no skin in the game, but 7th October changed me.

It is my hope that most people feel the same as you do, and that the loud voices are simply that: loud. Unfortunately, their screams cause intimidation and make people doubt themselves, so it’s important we all keep speaking up. Courage begets courage.

As for no skin in the game: I think everyone has skin in the game. Jews are just the outer layer. But if Americans accept normalization of barbarism, rape, and hostage-taking, they are digging their own graves too.

I’m sorry you are losing people. We all are, that’s for sure.

Yes I agree it’s imperative that all of us stand up to this. It will be us next, but that’s not why I feel this so strongly. It just felt so personal and so evil and so dehumanising. By having ‘no skin in the game’, I just meant to highlight that I am not Jewish but I am here. We might not be very loud, but we are here. Oh, and sorry I misspelled Israel, I was actually a bit teary while typing and couldn’t see!

LOL. And @anzabannanna proves the point. No reasoning with her. She is just a racist asshole that wants jews dead and Palestinians controlled by an Islamic death cult while she sits around the freshman dorm saying "look at me, look at me. I'm special dammit"

Spare me. Palestinians deserve better than her.

What is the plenty of evidence you are referring to? I also have plenty of evidence. I was there. Now, you can call me a liar. I'd expect that from you. Or not. What evidence do you have? Were you there?

So you're telling me that you've decided to believe something, and that's the end of it? I'm curious. You sound hostile, so maybe because I'm a zionist, you'd want to kill me? Would you go that far?

Exhausting, terrifying, frustrating, enraging, isn’t it? I find that the first stacks I go to—and some days the only ones—are those by people like you and me. The solidarity helps. But then I turn on MSNBC or read a headline and my heart is pounding and my fists and jaw are clenched again and again and again. Hugs to you and all those who are a part of our community here on substack. Someone should compile a list so we can all subscribe to each other. We need each other.

Substack has really helped. Twitter was a nightmare, but now I follow mostly just pro-Israel people. I also woke recently to discover that Joyce Carol Oates started following me over there after I commented about the writing community on one of her threads, so as a newer person in the writing community, with only a few bylines (but already middle-aged), that was a shocking surprise!

Interestingly, it is this most recent post addressing the writing community that is getting the most traffic since I got on this platform a few months ago. It felt like a risk to publish here, especially as someone with no footing yet, so maybe more people are looking for voices such as ours, and we are not as alone as we think?

Your idea is a good one too. We need to curate a list. And then publish that/recommend each other.

Yes. People are eager for it. I get more subscriptions after my pieces and notes on the Israel/Hamas war (and related issues) than any others. Surprised me at first, but not any more. The need for community around this is great.

The problem with this type of argument—and I’m 100 percent pro-Israel—is that it opens you to the counter argument, which is “I’ll do that if you watch all the Gazan children being blown to bits with your children” etc. You won’t convince anyone this way who is not already convinced. You’ll just get into a pointless tit for tat about which horror is more horrifying.

Expand full comment
Jen Gilman Porat's avatar

Correct. And I posted this before yesterday’s hostage retrieval, and we already see people tweeting how they’d rather remain a hostage than cost Gazan lives.

I recommended one guy add this clause to his living will. Of course, it would be preferable if he could literally trade himself for one of the captive Israelis.

I agree that I will not change any entrenched minds, but I want to challenge the writing community.

What is happening, I suspect, intimidates many writers, and not just Jewish/Israeli ones. It needs to be called out. Again and again. Writers boycotting PEN America is just one example of insane self destruction.

People need to know they are not alone. We cannot allow a few loud voices to quiet all. I think people are being bullied. And it’s dangerous. We are seeing a quick escalation through phases of antisemitism.

If you have any ideas or experiences that have proven effective, please share them. We all need help navigating and fighting the antisemitism.

I’ve tried to explain this away too. But I think it makes sense to take this at face value. Liberals are anti-semites. Liberalism is anti-semetical. (Not sure if that’s a word.) The only big mystery to me is why have Jews always been majority liberal? I think it’s perhaps because the connection between liberalism/socialism/communism and totalitarianism has never been so clear as now.

I will not allow myself to be cowed by your presence. You and your ilk do not intimidate me in the slightest. In fact, I am even prepared to offer you a hug if that is what you crave.

Responding to your venom with more hate only fuels the already raging fire. I recognize that we may hold opposing views, but it is neither rational nor justifiable for you to wish harm upon me.

Are you ready for a calm and respectful conversation without resorting to personal attacks? Let us exchange ideas open-mindedly so we can truly comprehend each other's perspectives. Would you be able to rise to the challenge?
